What is Bridge the Gap™?
The Bridge the Gap (BTG) program identifies and addresses gaps in HIV/AIDS care and prevention and other emerging health related crises.
What is NMAC? What is FHF?
The National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) develops leadership in communities of color and addresses the challenges of HIV/AIDS. The Flowers Heritage Foundation (FHF) created the Bridge The Gap program to help ensure that the life-saving medication needs of low-income person living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. are met. These partners are leading in addressing unmet need for a critical public health issue.
What is the problem?
The AIDS Drug Assistance Program - ADAP provides access to critical, life-saving medications for low-income, uninsured, and underinsured people with HIV/AIDS. ADAPs must continually maintain a balance between available resources and demand for services - both of which are unpredictable from year to year (NASTAD, 2009).
Currently, there is an imbalance between resources and demand due to the current U.S. economic downturn and newly discovered infections resulting from expanded HIV screening and testing initiatives.
Numbers of People Living with HIV/AIDS - PLWHA in the U.S. are eligible to receive these HIV medications but are unable to obtain them because of funding shortages and/or cost containment strategies implemented in the states they reside.
ADAP Waiting Lists exist increasingly in states around the country and increases are anticipated in early 2010. (See Map for Numbers by States)
What is a solution? How can you help?
A shared goal for the National Minority AIDS Council and the Flowers Heritage Foundation is to ensure access to care for PLWHA and alleviate ADAP Waiting Lists. You can bridge the gap by donating $5, $10, $25, $50, or more to save people's lives. One hundred percent (100%) of donor contributions will go directly to help PLWHA who have no other means for obtaining life-sustaining medications.
